Franklin County, in the great state of Texas, is situated in the northeastern region of the state, with its center lying roughly 100 miles east of Dallas. Established on March 8, 1875, Franklin County was formed from portions of neighboring Titus County. As with many other Texan counties, its name pays homage to an illustrious figure in American history, this time being Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

The land of Franklin County was originally inhabited by the Caddo Native American tribe. European exploration and settlement started in the 18th century, predominantly by French and Spanish settlers. Immigration from the Southern United States began in the early 19th century and increased more rapidly following Texas' annexation to the U.S. in 1845.

The agricultural sector in Franklin County has historically focused on producing various crops such as cotton, corn, wheat, and livestock rearing. The cotton industry saw a boom in the late 19th and early 20th-centuries, eventually fading due to boll weevil infestations and competition from other parts of the country.

Mount Vernon, the county seat, experienced steady growth and development after the St. Louis Southwestern Railway extended its lines to the town in 1887. This construction led to increased settlement and economic activity in the region.

Today, Franklin County remains a predominantly rural region, with its economy driven by agriculture, local industries, and a budding tourism sector catering to visitors who appreciate its rich history, scenic beauty, and recreational opportunities.

For a fun fact about Franklin County, the area boasts an impressive example of 19th-century architecture, with the Franklin County Courthouse, built in 1912, displaying Romanesque and Beaux-Arts styles. This historic building remains a centerpiece of Mount Vernon's downtown area and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
