Grayson County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of Texas, United States. Established in 1846, it was named in honor of Peter Wagener Grayson, a distinguished lawyer, poet, and diplomat who played significant roles in Texas history, including serving as attorney general of the Republic of Texas.

Initially, the area was occupied by various Native American tribes, notably the Caddo and Cherokee. The first permanent white settlement can be traced back to the early 1830s when pioneers and traders established a trading post in the region. The development of Grayson County was helped by its strategic location on both the Texas Road and Butterfield Overland Mail route; these major routes were pivotal in connecting Texas and the eastern United States. In the mid-19th century, the county experienced an influx of European settlers, including German, Irish, and Welsh immigrants, who contributed to its economic growth through agriculture and businesses.

The county seat, Sherman, was established in 1846 and named after General Sidney Sherman, who was critical to the Texas Revolution. Sherman became a thriving commercial center with the arrival of the railroad in the1870s. The city experienced rapid industrial growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the establishment of several factories, mills, and the birth of the Texas Interurban Railway.

Grayson County played a role during the Civil War; many residents fought for the Confederacy, and the county faced economic difficulties during and after the conflict. Despite this, the county's economy managed to recover and expand through agricultural diversification (cotton, corn, and wheat), cattle ranching, and a range of business developments.

Today, Grayson County is known for its vibrant community, recreational destinations, and educational institutions, such as Austin College and Grayson College.

Fun Fact: In 1873, the birthplace of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, was in Denison, Grayson County. Eisenhower's birthplace has been converted into a museum and is a popular tourist destination in the region.
