Hale County, located in the High Plains region of West Texas, was created by the Texas Legislature in 1876 as a part of the Texas Panhandle. It was named after Lt. John C. Hale, who valiantly fought during the Mexican-American War. However, it wasn't until 1888 that the government was organized in the county, with Plainview being named as the county seat.

In the early days, Hale County's economy was primarily based on cattle ranching. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, settlers arrived and began farming, cultivating crops like cotton, wheat, and corn. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railway in 1906 and the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway in 1910 significantly contributed to the growth and development of the county, as it improved transportation and attracted more settlers to the area.

Today, Hale County is known for its agricultural roots and continues to be a prominent producer of cotton, corn, soybeans, and sorghum. The industry has diversified over the years, and it now includes food processing, healthcare services, and the manufacturing of wind turbine components.
