Hansford County is located in the Texas Panhandle region in the northwestern part of the state. It was created on August 21, 1876, from the Bexar County land by the Texas Legislature. However, it remained unorganized until April 17, 1889, when it was officially organized. The county was named after John M. Hansford, a Texas state congressman and prominent lawyer.

The growth of Hansford County was largely driven by the cattle ranching industry in the late 1800s, particularly from large ranches such as the XIT Ranch and the Turkey Track Ranch. In the early 1900s, the expansion of the railroad through the region helped boost commerce, allowing the establishment of new towns, including Gruver and Spearman.

Agriculture has been a significant part of Hansford County's economy, with wheat and cattle as main crops. The discovery of the Panhandle-Hugoton Gas Field in the 1920s also contributed to the county's growth, making it a hub for natural gas production.

Hansford County is home to several places listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as the Texas Technological College Dairy Barn and the Waters-Pierce Oil Company Service Station.

Fun Fact: Hansford County was originally home to the Antelope Creek Phase, a part of the Native American culture dating back to around 1200 CE. Some fascinating archeological sites in the county feature remnants from this culture, such as pottery, stone tools, and architecture.
