Lamar County, located in the northeastern part of Texas, was established on December 17, 1840, and was named in honor of Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas. The county seat, Paris, was founded in 1844 and named after the French capital to attract European settlers.

Originally inhabited by Caddo and Choctaw Native American tribes, Lamar County saw an influx of Anglo-American settlers in the 1820s and 1830s. The region predominantly relied on agriculture, especially cotton production, which played a major role in its mid-19th-century growth. The arrival of the railroad in the 1870s significantly impacted the county's development by promoting trade, transportation, and the expansion of the cotton industry.

One fun fact about Lamar County is the presence of the Eiffel Tower replica in the city of Paris, Texas. This 65-foot-tall structure was built in 1993 by the local ironworkers union and originally stood at 60 feet. In 1998, a cowboy hat was installed at the top, making it 5 feet taller and exemplifying Texas's unique blend of European and American Western culture.
