Limestone County is located in central Texas, with its county seat in Groesbeck. It was established in 1846 and named after the abundance of limestone deposits found within its borders. The area was initially inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Tonkawa, Waco, and Kickapoo until European American settlers began to arrive in the early 1800s. The earliest settlements in the county were Fort Parker (established in 1834) and Springfield (established in 1838), which later served as the county seat until Groesbeck was designated as the county seat in 1873.

Limestone County's economy heavily depended on agriculture throughout its history. Cotton was the main crop, and the county became a leading cotton producer in Texas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ranching and livestock, such as cattle and sheep, were also important to the local economy. The discovery of oil in the early 1900s brought additional economic opportunities, and the county remains a producer of oil and gas to this day.

One fun fact about Limestone County is that it is home to the "Old Fort Parker Historic Site," which is the reconstructed site of the original Fort Parker, a key location in the history of Texas. Fort Parker played a significant role in the early settlement of Texas and was also a site of tragedy when the fort was attacked by Native Americans in 1836, leading to the capture of Cynthia Ann Parker. She would later give birth to a son, Quanah Parker, who would grow up to become one of the most influential Comanche leaders in history.
