Lubbock County, located in the great state of Texas, was first established on August 21, 1876, and was named after Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a former Texas Ranger and Confederate officer. Situated in the southern part of the Texas High Plains in the heartland of the South Plains region, Lubbock County spans an area of approximately 900 square miles.

Early inhabitants of Lubbock County were Native American tribes such as the Comanche, Apaches, and Kiowas. European exploration of the region, particularly by the Spanish, began in the 16th century, but permanent settlement took place mainly in the late 19th century. Cattle ranching played a significant role in the settlement of the county, with prominent ranchers like George W. Singer and Frank M. Wheelock building some of the earliest ranches in the region.

Lubbock, the county seat and largest city, was founded in 1890 when Old Lubbock and Monterey joined together near the middle of the county. It became a hub for the favorable development of the agricultural sector, particularly cotton farming, after the Santa Fe Railway reached Lubbock in 1910.

Today, Lubbock County is an economically vibrant region with a strong agricultural industry, as well as flourishing educational, healthcare, and service sectors. Texas Tech University, established in 1923 in Lubbock, has significantly contributed to the cultural and economic development of the region.
