Martin County in Texas lies on the southern high plains and is named after Wylie Martin, one of the original Texas Rangers. Its county seat is Stanton, which was named after Edwin M. Stanton, the United States Secretary of War. The county was officially created in 1876, but its significance grew when it was organized in 1884.

The region was initially inhabited by various Indian tribes, such as the Comanche and Apache. European settlers arrived in the late 19th century, mainly drawn by the cattle industry and ranching opportunities. In the early 1900s, the discovery of oil in the Permian Basin transformed Martin County, promoting a rapid growth in the local economy.

Following the establishment of the Yates Oil Field in 1926, Martin County saw a rise in oil production, and the agricultural sector soon embraced cotton and sorghum farming. Nowadays, the county remains an important contributor to the Texas economy, mainly through its oil, gas, and agricultural sectors.

One fun fact about Martin County is that it's home to the "World's Smallest Courthouse," measuring only 25 feet by 25 feet. This quirky attraction in the downtown area of Stanton is a favorite among tourists visiting the region.
