Milam County, located in the central region of the great state of Texas, was established in 1837, during the Republic of Texas era. Originally, the county was much larger, encompassing several present-day counties, but went through numerous boundary changes, resulting in its current size. Named after Benjamin Rush Milam, a significant figure in the Texas Revolution, the county has a rich history.

In its early days, Milam County consisted of primarily indigenous tribes, including the Tonkawa, Waco, and Apache peoples. Later, Spanish explorers, such as Luis de Moscoso Alvarado, traversed the region in the 1540s. The Spanish colonization continued until the early 19th century when Anglo-American settlers, led by influential empresario Green DeWitt, established the DeWitt colony in 1825.

The county seat, Cameron, was founded in 1846 and named after Scottish Highlander Captain Ewen Cameron, an influential figure during the Texas Revolution. The county primarily relied on agriculture, which remains a significant industry today. The emergence of railroad networks in the late 19th century also connected Milam County to other areas, thus promoting economic growth.

A fun fact about Milam County is that it is known as the "Milam County Bluebonnet Trails" because of the stunning display of bluebonnet flowers that bloom throughout the county during springtime. This annual spectacle draws visitors from far and wide, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
