Nolan County is located in the great state of Texas, in the central western part of the state, largely covering the area of the Rolling Plains. Established on August 21, 1876, the county was formed from the Bexar District and the Young Territory. The county was named in honor of Philip Nolan, a horse trader, and adventurer who conducted several expeditions in the late 18th and early 19th century in the region which is now Texas.

The county seat, Sweetwater, is situated at the intersection of the paths taken by early cattle drives in the state, specifically the Goodnight-Loving and Chisholm Trails. The region's development accelerated during the 1880s, when the Texas and Pacific Railway built tracks through the area.

During the early 20th century, Nolan County experienced a significant population boom, thanks to the discovery of oil in the nearby Permian Basin, allowing the region to undertake efforts in both ranching and agriculture.

A fun fact about Nolan County is that it is home to the World's Largest Rattlesnake Roundup, held annually in Sweetwater since 1958. This event helps control the dangerous rattlesnake population in the surrounding area and offers a unique experience of rattlesnake demonstrations and cook-offs, drawing thousands of brave visitors each year.
