Reeves County, located in the Permian Basin region of West Texas, was established in 1883 and named in honor of George Robertson Reeves, a Texan legislator, soldier, and politician. The county's seat is located in the city of Pecos. The first known inhabitants of this region were Native American tribes, and the Spanish explorer Antonio de Espejo was among the earliest Europeans to traverse this area in 1583.

Reeves County was initially part of the Bexar District in Texas and later became part of Pecos County. However, in 1883, it was separated and established as its own entity. The region experienced development in agriculture, ranching, and oil industry, with the population gradually increasing over the years. By 1920, its population had reached around 3,710 people. In the 1930s, irrigation projects helped convert the arid landscape into fertile agricultural fields. With the discovery of oil, the region experienced an economic boom during the mid-20th century, notably with the opening of the P-Reeves gas field in 1955.

A fun fact about Reeves County is that it is home to the world's first rodeo, which was held on July 4, 1883, in the town of Pecos. This event is considered the "birthplace of the modern rodeo" and marked the beginning of the now widespread American cowboy tradition.
