Sterling County was officially established in 1891, located in the great state of Texas, USA. The county was named in honor of W.S. Sterling, a buffalo hunter and early settler, who later became a rancher in the area. The county seat is Sterling City, which also happens to be the largest city in the county.

Originally, Sterling County was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Comanche, which were eventually displaced by incoming settlers in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. In the late 1800s, cattle ranching became prevalent in the area, with ranchers using the open range to raise their herds. As settlers continued to move into Sterling County, communities gradually started to grow, and agriculture emerged as an important economic sector alongside ranching.

The discovery of oil in the early twentieth century had a significant impact on Sterling County, leading to an oil boom that brought new residents, businesses, and infrastructures to the area. The industry continued to flourish and remains a critical part of the local economy today.

Fun fact: In Sterling County, there is a remarkable geological site called the Slaughter Canyon Cave that attracts nature enthusiasts and adventurers.
