Wheeler County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Texas, was formed on August 21, 1876, and was named after the famed Confederate captain turned Texas legislator, Royal T. Wheeler. The county's first seat was Mooresville, until it was moved to Wheeler in 1907. Wheeler County is part of the Amarillo metropolitan area and spans approximately 914 square miles.

Throughout its history, Wheeler County has been home to various cultures and peoples. First inhabited by native tribes, including the Comanche, Kiowa, and Cheyenne, these lands became an early European exploration site in the 16th century when Spanish explorer Francisco Vazquez de Coronado passed through. Settlers from the eastern United States began to arrive in the late 19th century, following the construction of the Fort Elliott military base in 1875.

The economy of Wheeler County has traditionally relied on agriculture, ranching, and oil production. It is home to the historic Red River Bridge War between Texas and Oklahoma in the early 1930s, a dispute that was resolved without any casualties.

A fun fact about Wheeler County is that it was a location for the 1992 film "Leap of Faith" starring Steve Martin and Debra Winger. The movie was filmed in the small town of Groom, which was temporarily transformed into the fictional town of Rustwater, Kansas.
