Amelia County, located in the great state of Virginia, was established on April 1, 1735, making it one of the earliest counties in the state. It was named in honor of Princess Amelia of Great Britain, the daughter of King George II. The county is situated in the South Central region of Virginia, also known as the Heartland.

Amelia County played a significant role in American history. The Civil War's Battle of Amelia Springs took place within its borders on April 5, 1865. This was one of the last engagements before Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, which marked the end of the conflict.

Historically, the economy of Amelia County was based on agriculture - primarily tobacco and various grains. The county is also known for its deposits of high-quality granite, which has been quarried and used in the construction of buildings and monuments across the nation.

One fun fact about Amelia County is that it is home to Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park, a site preserved as a testimony of the Civil War's last days. The park includes a museum and trails, where visitors can learn about the events and participate in various engaging activities.
