Appomattox County is located in the Piedmont region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1845, the county was formed from parts of Buckingham, Prince Edward, Campbell, and Charlotte Counties. It was named after the Appomattox River, which itself derives its name from the Native American tribe called "Appamatuck," who were part of the Algonquian-speaking Powhatan Confederacy.

Appomattox County is historically significant due to its role in American Civil War history. The county is best known as the site of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. This event marked the end of the Confederate States of America and signaled the start of reunification.

Appomattox Court House, a small village in the county, served as the county seat until 1892 when the seat was moved to the now Town of Appomattox. The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park contains original and reconstructed buildings from the 19th century, allowing visitors to experience the setting of the historical surrender.

A fun fact about Appomattox County is that the phrase "waiting for the other shoe to drop" is believed to have originated during the Civil War, specifically referring to soldiers' experiences in Appomattox. The soldiers were said to listen for the sound of boots dropping to the floor to know if a person had retired for the night, waiting for both shoes to drop before they could finally rest.
