Buckingham County is a rural county located in the heart of Virginia and was officially formed in 1761 from the southeastern part of Albemarle County. It was named in honor of the Duke of Buckingham, a prominent figure in English politics in the 17th century. The county seat, originally named Maysville, was established in 1822 and is now known as Buckingham.

Historically, Buckingham County was settled by a mix of English, Scotch-Irish, and Huguenot immigrants seeking farmland and religious freedom. The county was primarily an agricultural region, and tobacco was its main cash crop during the colonial and early federal periods. Over time, it also became an essential source for gold and slate mining in Virginia. The Buckingham Slate Mine, now a historic landmark, produced high-quality slate used for various purposes, including construction, gravestones, and writing slates.

A notable fun fact about Buckingham County is that it is considered the geographical center of Virginia. The precise point, known as the centroid of Virginia, is located within the county limits. This factor symbolizes the county's central position in the state both geographically and historically, as it has contributed significantly to Virginia's economy and culture over the centuries.
