Charles City County is located in the eastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1634 as one of the eight original shires of the Virginia Colony, it has a rich historical background dating back to early colonial days. Covering an area of approximately 204 square miles, Charles City County is situated along the James River between Williamsburg and Richmond.

Due to its strategic location, the county played a significant role in the development of the colony. Prominent Native American tribes, including the Chickahominy and the Paspahegh, inhabited the area before the English settlers arrived. The county was named in honor of King Charles I of England, and many historic events occurred within its boundaries.

Charles City County is home to several notable plantations, such as Westover Plantation, Shirley Plantation, and Berkeley Plantation. These large estates are renowned for their stately mansions, picturesque landscapes, and the significant role they played in shaping the social, economic, and political life of colonial Virginia.

The county also witnessed important events during the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War. For instance, the Battle of Green Spring took place in Charles City County in 1781, which was a tactical victory for the British forces under General Cornwallis but ultimately contributed to their defeat at Yorktown later that year.

One fun fact about Charles City County is that it was the birthplace of two U.S. presidents, William Henry Harrison (9th president) and his grandson, Benjamin Harrison (23rd president). Both of these leaders were born at their family's estate, Berkeley Plantation, making Charles City County an important landmark in American presidential history.
