Charlottesville is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and it is not a part of any county. It is located within the Albemarle County, though administratively separate. Established in 1762, Charlottesville was named in honor of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England. The city is of great historical significance due to its central role in the American Revolutionary War and as the home of three U.S. Presidents: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe.

The University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, is located in Charlottesville and has contributed significantly to the city's cultural and intellectual atmosphere. The city is also known for its well-preserved architectural treasures, including Monticello, the former plantation home of Jefferson, and Ash Lawn-Highland, the residence of James Monroe.

One fun fact about Charlottesville is that it was the setting of the popular sitcom "The Waltons" which aired from 1972 to 1981. The show was based on the real life of its creator, Earl Hamner Jr., who was born and raised in Schuyler, Virginia, a community located about 20 miles south of Charlottesville.
