Craig County is a county located in the southwestern part of the state of Virginia, USA. It was established in 1851 and was named after Robert Craig, a Virginia state legislator. The county's history is closely tied to the Appalachian Mountains and the industries that have developed in the region.

The area that is now Craig County was once inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Cherokee and the Shawnee. In the 18th century, European-American settlers began to arrive in the area, and the county was eventually established as part of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

One fun fact about Craig County is that it is home to anceint soapstone quarries. Soapstone, which is a soft and easily carved stone, was a valuable resource for Native American tribes in the area, who used it to make various tools and artifacts. The quarries, which are located in the town of New Castle, have been dated to at least 1,500 BCE, making them some of the oldest known quarries in the new world. The soapstone from the quarries was used by Native Americans for thousands of years, and the area remains an important site for archaeological research today.
