Danville County, officially known as the City of Danville, is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, located near the southern border of the state. It was established in 1793 and was named after the Dan River, which runs through the city. Danville played a crucial role in the Civil War as a major center for the Confederate States of America, where it served as a strategic supply and hospital location. In fact, Danville had the nickname "Last Capital of the Confederacy" because it was the site of the final cabinet meeting of the Confederate government before its collapse.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Danville emerged as a significant center for the tobacco industry and textile manufacturing. The city became known for its production of bright leaf tobacco and Dan River Inc., one of the largest textile mills in the South.

A fun fact about Danville is its involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, where it earned the nickname "City of Churches" due to the numerous religious congregations, primarily within the African American community, that played a key role in supporting the campaign for racial equality. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited the city in 1963 and the Danville Christian Progressive Association was established, further strengthening the resolve of the community to end segregation. In recent years, the city has focused on revitalizing its downtown and riverfront areas to showcase its rich historical heritage and to promote tourism.
