Hanover County, located in the great state of Virginia, has a rich history that dates back to its creation on November 26, 1720. The county was formed from the New Kent County, which was part of the original eight shires established in 1634. The county was named in honor of King George I of Great Britain, who was from the House of Hanover in Germany.

During the early years, Hanover County was primarily an agricultural community, with tobacco being the main cash crop. It was also home to prominent historical figures, such as Patrick Henry, a Founding Father of the United States and the first post-colonial Governor of Virginia. Henry is best known for his pivotal role in advocating for colonial independence and for his famous speech, "Give me liberty or give me death," delivered in 1775.

Hanover County played a significant role during the American Civil War, as it was the site of several critical battles, including the Battle of Hanover Courthouse in 1862 and the Battle of Cold Harbor in 1864. The county was also integral to the Confederate war effort, with the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad running through the area.

In the post-Civil War era, Hanover County witnessed economic and population growth, transitioning from a mostly rural region to a blend of residential, commercial, and industrial communities. Today, Hanover County remains steeped in history, with several historic sites and landmarks still standing, such as the Hanover Courthouse, the Hanover Tavern, and the Patrick Henry National Memorial.
