Harrisonburg, not a county but an independent city, is located within Rockingham County in the beautiful state of Virginia. Its history can be traced back to the early 18th century when settlers, mostly of English and German descent, began to arrive and establish communities in the Shenandoah Valley.

The city was officially founded in 1779 and named after Thomas Harrison, a wealthy landowner who donated 50 acres of his land for the construction of a new courthouse and legislative center. During the American Civil War, Harrisonburg played a significant role by serving as a supply center for Confederate troops and witnessing the Battle of Harrisonburg in 1862.

Following the civil war, the city experienced rapid development, which led to the founding of the State Normal & Industrial School for Women in 1908, which later became James Madison University. Another higher education institution, the Eastern Mennonite University, was established in Harrisonburg in 1917.

Today, Harrisonburg is known for its diverse population, rich history, picturesque surroundings, and the presence of the two universities. A fun fact about this region is that Harrisonburg is nicknamed "The Friendly City" due to its warm and welcoming atmosphere, contributing to the city's charm and appeal to visitors and residents alike.
