Nelson County is a picturesque region located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was established on March 1, 1807, and named in honor of General Thomas Nelson Jr., a key figure in the American Revolutionary War and later the Governor of Virginia. The county was formed from portions of Amherst County.

Nelson County is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and covers an area of about 474 square miles. The county seat is the town of Lovingston. In the early years, Nelson County primarily relied on agriculture, with tobacco and wheat being the main crops. As time went on, the county diversified into apple and peach orchards, as well as the lumber, textile, and milling industries.

A significant event in Nelson County's history was the disastrous flood caused by Hurricane Camille in August 1969. The county suffered massive property damage, loss of life, and severe economic consequences. It stands as one of the worst natural disasters in Virginia's history.

One fun fact about Nelson County is that it is home to the "Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail," which is a 7-mile long rails-to-trails conversion. The trail, which opened in 2008 in Piney River, follows the Piney and Tye rivers and passes through stunning natural areas, historic sites, and rural farmlands, offering visitors an enjoyable and scenic recreational opportunity.
