Northampton County, located in the great state of Virginia, has a rich historical background dating back to the early 17th century. It is situated on the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Originally inhabited by the Occohannock Indians, the area was first explored by Europeans when Captain John Smith visited in 1608.

The county was officially founded in 1634 as one of the eight original shires of the Virginia Colony. It was named after Northamptonshire, England, in honor of the then-reigning English monarch, King Charles I. The area went through multiple name changes and border adjustments, but in 1642, it was reorganized and established as Northampton County.

Northampton County played a role in the American Revolution, with its citizens participating in various capacities, including the famous patriot John Cropper. Agriculture, fishing, and maritime trade have been the mainstays of the county's economy since its establishment. During the 19th century, it became a prominent center for oyster harvesting and seafood production.

A fun fact about Northampton County is that it is home to the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is a significant resting and feeding area for migrating birds, with over 300 bird species documented at the site. Additionally, the refuge provides habitat for threatened and endangered species, making it an important ecological and conservation area in the region.
