Portsmouth County, located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, has a rich historical background. Established in 1752 from a part of Norfolk County, it is now a part of the independent city of Portsmouth, which was founded in 1858. Portsmouth holds great significance as a major seaport and naval base due to its strategic position along the Elizabeth River.

The area was first explored in the early 1600s by English settlers, with the town of Portsmouth being established in the early 1750s by Colonel William Crawford, a prominent merchant and shipbuilder. The city was named after Portsmouth, England, reflecting its maritime roots.

The Gosport Shipyard, established in 1767 and later renamed as Norfolk Naval Shipyard, has played a central role in Portsmouth's development. The shipyard has made significant contributions to American naval history, including serving as a base for the construction and repair of multiple naval ships during the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the American Civil War.

Portsmouth's historical significance continued into the 20th century, with the city playing a key role as a military hub during both World War I and II. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard served as the site for the production of various warships and submarines, contributing to the Allied victories.

A fun fact about Portsmouth County is the presence of the historic "Path of History" walking tour, which takes visitors through the Olde Towne Historic District. This tour showcases beautiful examples of 18th, 19th, and early 20th-century architecture, including several museums and historic sites, such as the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, the Lightship Portsmouth Museum, and the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church-one of Virginia's oldest African American churches.
