Surry County, located in the great state of Virginia, was formed in 1652 from portions of James City County. It was named after the English county of Surrey, which was at the time a royal domain. The county lies within the tidewater region of Virginia, situated along the James River, which was essential for its early development.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Surry County's economy was primarily based on agriculture and its residents were engaged in tobacco cultivation. Many early settlers were part of the influential planter class, owning large landholdings and relying on enslaved labor. The county also played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War, as British forces led by General Benedict Arnold and Colonel William Phillips attempted to raid Hog Island in 1781. However, their attempts were thwarted by the Virginia militia.

Surry County possesses several historic landmarks such as Bacon's Castle, which is the oldest brick dwelling in the United States, built in 1665. Another historical site is the Chippokes Plantation State Park, which dates back to 1619 and is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in the country.

Fun fact: One of the most famous features of Surry County is the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, a free automobile ferry service that connects Surry County with Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. The ferry has been operating since 1925 and provides beautiful views of the region and the James River.
