Benton County is located in southeast Washington state, founded on March 8, 1905, and named after Thomas Hart Benton, a U.S. Senator from Missouri who was an advocate for western expansion. The county is part of the Tri-Cities Metropolitan area, which also includes Franklin and Walla Walla Counties. The region was originally inhabited by the Indigenous Yakama tribe and the Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla, and Wanapum tribes before European settlement.

In the 19th century, the Oregon Trail brought European settlers to the region. A notable historical event in Benton County was the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1883, which played a significant role in the economic development of the area.

In the 1940s, Benton County gained national attention due to the Manhattan Project and the development of atomic bomb during World War II. The project resulted in the establishment of the Hanford Engineer Works within Benton County, which was instrumental in producing the plutonium required for the atomic bomb. The Hanford Site continued to be important in the U.S. nuclear program during the Cold War era, and today, it is dedicated to environmental restoration and preservation.

A fun fact about Benton County is that it is home to the Red Mountain Viticulture Area, one of Washington's premier wine regions. The area is well-known for producing high-quality wines, particularly red varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Benton County's wine industry continues to thrive and attract visitors from around the world, making it an important player in Washington State's wine tourism industry.
