Kittitas County is located in the central part of Washington state, in the United States. Established on November 24, 1883, the county was originally formed out of the southeastern portion of the now-neighboring Yakima County. Covering an area of approximately 2,333 square miles, Kittitas County has had various cultural and economic influences over the years.

The region has a rich history dating back to the indigenous inhabitants, the Kittitas tribe, from which the county derived its name. The term "Kittitas" translates to "white chalk" or "shale rock" in the indigenous language, referring to the abundant resources found in the area.

With the arrival of European settlers in the 19th century, agriculture took on a significant role in the region's development. The fertile lands of the Kittitas Valley attracted farmers, leading to thriving settlements. Some of these early settlers were cattle ranchers who drove their livestock through the region on the way to gold fields in the north.

The late 19th century saw the introduction of railroads in the county, which expanded access to trade and led to an economic boom. The Northern Pacific Railway and the Milwaukee Road both passed through Kittitas County, leading to increased farming, mining, and lumber industries. The city of Ellensburg, the county seat, grew in significance as a transportation and commercial hub during this period.

In the past century, the region has continued to evolve, with a focus on education, outdoor recreation, and renewable energy. Central Washington University, located in Ellensburg, attracts students from around the state, while the diverse landscape offers opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. Additionally, the scenic beauty of the Yakima River Canyon and the surrounding Cascade Range has drawn tourists to Kittitas County.

A fun fact about Kittitas County is that it is home to the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility, which features over 150 wind turbines and a solar array. This renewable energy facility offers public tours and serves as a testament to the region's ongoing commitment to sustainable development.
