Klickitat County is located in the south-central part of Washington state, USA. Established on December 20, 1859, the county was named after the Klickitat tribe, a Native American group that had been living in this region for centuries. The county covers an area of nearly 1,900 square miles and has a diverse landscape, including the eastern slope of the Cascade Mountains, high plateaus, and the Columbia River Gorge.

During the 19th century, European-American settlers migrated to Klickitat County, initially drawn by the discovery of gold near the Klickitat River in 1858. Soon after, cattle ranching, sheep herding, and wheat farming became significant economic activities within the region. With the arrival of the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railway in the early 20th century, Klickitat County experienced further growth, which spurred the establishment of several small towns.

Throughout its history, the county has been known for its natural resources, including timber from its forests and rich fisheries along the Columbia River. Additionally, the area played a crucial role in the development of hydroelectric power with the construction of the Bonneville Dam in the 1930s and John Day Dam in the 1960s.

A fun fact about Klickitat County is that it is home to the Klickitat Trail, a 31-mile-long rails-to-trails corridor that runs along the former railroad bed of the Goldendale Branch of the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railway. This trail, which opened in 2003, provides recreational opportunities for hikers, bikers, and equestrians and offers spectacular views of the Klickitat River and nearby landscape.
