Skamania County, located in the southwestern portion of Washington state, was established on March 9, 1854. The county's name is derived from the Native American word "sk'maniak," which means "swift waters". Spanning approximately 1,656 square miles, Skamania County is nestled within the Columbia River Gorge and is characterized by lush forests, rugged mountains, and striking waterfalls.

The region is enriched with a colorful history featuring indigenous communities, fur trappers, and early Euro-American pioneers. The Lewis and Clark Expedition famously passed through the area in 1805, and it was later frequented by trappers of the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1820s and 1830s. It was the establishment of the Oregon Trail in the 1840s that eventually led to more permanent settlements in the area.

A fun fact about Skamania County is that it is home to Mount St. Helens, one of the most well-known active stratovolcanoes in the United States. The volcano erupted in 1980, causing widespread destruction and significantly altering the landscape of the region. Skamania County offers a range of recreational activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing, driven by its abundant natural beauty and attractions like Mount St. Helens, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
