Ashland County, located in the great state of Wisconsin, has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the early 19th century. It was established on March 27, 1860, and named after the estate of Kentucky statesman Henry Clay, which was called "Ashland." The county is situated in the northern part of Wisconsin and covers an area of approximately 2,292 square miles.

Before European settlers arrived in the region, the lands of Ashland County were inhabited by the Ojibwe, an indigenous tribe part of the Anishinaabe nation. The Ojibwe played a significant role in the county's early history, living off the land and waterways through hunting, fishing, and gathering.

In the early 19th century, the discovery of rich resources, such as timber and iron ore, attracted European settlers to the region. Ashland County became a hub for the lumber and mining industries, contributing to its growth and prosperity. The first permanent European settler in the county was Asaph Whittlesey, who arrived in 1854 and established a trading post that later grew into the city of Ashland.

Over the years, Ashland County's economy diversified to include manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. It was also home to several railroads that played a significant role in transporting goods and people in and out of the region, including the Wisconsin Central Railway and the Chicago and Northwestern Railway.

One fun fact about Ashland County is that it's home to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a unique area that includes 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland along the south shore of Lake Superior.
