Portage County is located in the central region of the great state of Wisconsin. Established in 1836 and officially organized in 1844, it is named after the portage between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River, which was previously used by Native Americans and French fur traders to transport goods between the two rivers.

Before European settlement, the area was home to various Native American tribes, including the Menominee, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk. The first Europeans to explore the region were likely French fur traders and missionaries in the late 17th century. The county initially prospered due to timber, agriculture, and the fur trade, while the construction of the Wisconsin River canal in the 1850s further accelerated development.

The city of Stevens Point, the county seat, was founded in 1858 and named after George Stevens, who operated a grocery store and inn at the location. Over time, the city became an important center for logging, agriculture, and education. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was established in 1894, further bolstering the region's cultural and economic growth.

Today, Portage County has a diversified economy encompassing education, healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture, with a population of over 70,000 residents.

Fun fact: Portage County is known for its environmental preservation efforts, with several parks, preserves, and green spaces that offer recreational activities for both residents and visitors. The Green Circle Trail is a 27-mile scenic hiking and biking trail that loops around the Stevens Point area, showcasing the natural beauty and vibrant history of the region.
