Vernon County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Wisconsin. Established by an act of the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature in 1851, it was initially named Bad Ax County, taking its name from the Bad Axe River, which flows through the region. The origin of the river's name comes from a mistranslation of the Native American name "Chippewa," which was mistaken for "bad ax." In 1862, the county underwent a name change to the more pleasing Vernon County, with Vernon meaning "green" or "spring-like" in Latin, a reference to the beautiful hills and valleys found in the area.

The area's history is significantly influenced by Native American cultures, including mound-building Hopewell and Late Woodland cultures. Before European settlement, various tribes such as the Menominee, Sauk, Fox, and Kickapoo inhabited the region. During the 1800s, the region witnessed a growing influx of European settlers, mainly Norwegians and Germans, who established communities and developed agriculture in the area.

Over the years, Vernon County developed a strong farming culture and became known for its dairy farming, corn, and tobacco production. In recent years, the area has also seen a rise in organic farming and community-supported agriculture.

One fun fact about Vernon County is that it's home to the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, a remarkable 8,600-acre, publicly managed land that preserves and showcases the unique beauty of the Driftless Area, a region untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age. This Reserve offers visitors various recreational activities such as hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, and cross-country skiing to enjoy the scenic landscape.
