Vilas County is located in the great state of Wisconsin, in the north-central region of the United States. Established on April 12, 1893, the county was named after Wisconsin's Lieutenant Governor, William Freeman Vilas, who served from 1891 to 1893. Vilas was also a prominent lawyer, a U.S. Senator, and Postmaster General under President Grover Cleveland.

Before the arrival of European settlers in the 19th century, the area was mainly inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people. The county's abundant forests, lakes, and rivers provided essential resources for the Native American inhabitants to thrive.

The growth and development of Vilas County were greatly influenced by the logging and timber industries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lumber mills and logging camps supported many early European settlers who came to the region for work. As the logging industry began to decline, the county shifted its focus to tourism and became a popular vacation destination in the Midwest.

Today, Vilas County boasts numerous attractions that cater to tourists, including stunning natural landscapes, state parks, and scenic trails. The county is home to more than 1,300 lakes, earning it the nickname "Land o' Lakes." This concentration of freshwater lakes makes Vilas County one of the highest lake-counties in the world. Furthermore, the county is also known for its popular snowmobile trails, which attract winter sports enthusiasts from around the region.

A fun fact about Vilas County is that it is home to the "Snowmobile Capital of the World," Eagle River, where the World Championship Snowmobile Derby takes place annually, drawing thousands of visitors and competitors alike.
