Barbour County is located in the north-central region of the great state of West Virginia, USA. Established on March 3, 1843, the county's creation was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly, with the land being carved out from the surrounding Harrison, Lewis, and Randolph counties. The county was named in honor of Phillip Pendleton Barbour, a prominent jurist and statesman from Virginia, who served as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

The community of Philippi, founded in 1843, became the county seat of Barbour County, and it played a significant role during the early years of the American Civil War. On June 3, 1861, Philippi saw one of the first engagements of the Civil War, known as the Battle of Philippi, or the Philippi Races, due to the swift retreat of Confederate forces. This Union victory significantly raised morale in the Northern states, boosted recruitment for the Union army, and contributed to West Virginia eventually joining the Union in 1863.

Barbour County's economy was mostly driven by agriculture, coal mining, and timber industries in its early.history. Today, it maintains its agricultural roots and is home to various recreational attractions and historical sites.

Fun fact: Barbour County Fair, an annual agricultural fair held in September in Philippi, offers a variety of entertainment, traditional exhibits, and fun activities. The week-long event offers a chance to celebrate and showcase the rich history, local talents, and agricultural pursuits of the county's residents.
