Braxton County, located in the central part of West Virginia, was named in honor of the prominent Virginia statesman and jurist, Carter Braxton. Established on January 15, 1836, the county was carved out of Nicholas, Kanawha, and Lewis counties. Sutton, the county seat, was named after John D. Sutton, who had given land for the construction of the town. The area of Braxton County encompasses approximately 516 square miles.

Braxton County played a role in the early transportation industry with the construction of the Weston and Gauley Bridge Turnpike between 1848 and 1850. This turnpike helped to connect central West Virginia with eastern markets. The county also witnessed the completion of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Gassaway in 1904, which further enhanced transportation and facilitated economic development.

The economy of Braxton County has traditionally been based on agriculture, natural resources, and manufacturing industries. The county's rich forests and abundant wildlife have also made it a destination for outdoor recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking.

One interesting fun fact about Braxton County is its connection to the Flatwoods Monster, a cryptid reported to have been sighted in the area. This mythical creature, also known as the "Braxton County Monster" or "Phantom of Flatwoods," was supposedly spotted by a group of local children and adults in September 1952. The creature, described as a tall, humanoid figure with a glowing face and a spade-shaped head, has become a popular local legend and has inspired events such as the annual Flatwoods Monster Festival which celebrates the county's unique folklore.
