Brooke County, West Virginia
.Brooke County, located within the great state of West Virginia, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. It is situated in the Northern Panhandle region of the state, bordered by the Ohio River to the west. The county was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on November 30, 1796, and was named in honor of Robert Brooke, the Governor of Virginia at the time.
Before the formation of the county, the region saw its first European settlers arrive in the mid-1700s, mainly of English, Scottish, and Irish origins. The area played an active role in the American Revolutionary War, with Fort Fincastle (later renamed Fort Henry) serving as a protective structure nearby in present-day Wheeling.
The incorporation of Brooke County coincided closely with the rise in industrialization along the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Brooke County became a hub of industry and commerce during the 19th and 20th centuries, largely due to its strategic location along the Ohio River.
