Brooke County, located within the great state of West Virginia, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. It is situated in the Northern Panhandle region of the state, bordered by the Ohio River to the west. The county was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on November 30, 1796, and was named in honor of Robert Brooke, the Governor of Virginia at the time.

Before the formation of the county, the region saw its first European settlers arrive in the mid-1700s, mainly of English, Scottish, and Irish origins. The area played an active role in the American Revolutionary War, with Fort Fincastle (later renamed Fort Henry) serving as a protective structure nearby in present-day Wheeling.

The incorporation of Brooke County coincided closely with the rise in industrialization along the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Brooke County became a hub of industry and commerce during the 19th and 20th centuries, largely due to its strategic location along the Ohio River. The rich natural resources of the region led to a boom in coal mining, iron production, and other heavy industries, which in turn allowed for the growth of towns and communities within the county.

Today, Brooke County hosts a population of approximately 23,000 residents and offers a variety of opportunities for recreation and cultural exploration. With a picturesque landscape consisting of rolling hills, forests, and the mighty Ohio River, the region offers numerous parks and recreational facilities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Fun fact: Brooke County boasts unique and intriguing attractions such as the Brooke County Historical Museum, which showcases various aspects of the region's history, including a collection of antique glassware produced by the former Fostoria Glass Company. The glass company once employed many residents of the county and helped solidify the area's reputation for fine craftsmanship.
