Calhoun County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was formally established on March 5, 1856, being named in honor of John C. Calhoun, a prominent American statesman and defender of states' rights. The county is situated in the western region of the state and spans approximately 281 square miles.

Before its establishment, Calhoun County was originally part of Gillmer and Wood counties. Owing to the Treaty of Big Springs in 1820, the land was bought from the local Native American tribes for pennies per acre, paving the way for the formation of new Virginia counties, which would later become part of West Virginia.

Calhoun County is mainly characterized by its lush forests, rolling hills, and small, tight-knit communities. The county seat, Grantsville, was named after a prominent early settler, Simon P. Stemple, whose land grant served as the site for the town's establishment. The town functioned as a trade center for the surrounding agricultural communities and attracted a variety of industries, including lumbering and tanning.

A fun fact about this region is the popularity of the West Virginia Molasses Festival, which has taken place annually in Calhoun County since 1967. The festival celebrates the tradition of making molasses using old-fashioned sorghum mills and provides a range of entertainment, including live music, parades, and crafts, attracting visitors from all over the state and beyond.
