Gilmer County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on February 3, 1845. It was named in honor of Thomas Walker Gilmer, a prominent Virginian lawyer, planter, and statesman who served as the 28th Governor of Virginia from 1840 to 1841 and later as the U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President John Tyler.

The county is situated in the western part of the state and spans a total area of approximately 340 square miles. The county seat is Glenville, which was originally called "Gilmer" but was renamed to prevent confusion with the county itself. Glenville is home to Glenville State College, established in 1872 as a teacher training institution.

One of the interesting historical events that took place in Gilmer County is the Battle of Glenville, which occurred on July 23, 1861, during the American Civil War. Confederate forces attempted to seize the town, but Union forces repelled the attack.

As for a fun fact, Gilmer County is known for its annual West Virginia State Folk Festival, held in Glenville since 1950. The festival celebrates traditional Appalachian culture, music, and crafts, drawing visitors from across the country to experience the rich history and traditions of the region.
