Jefferson County, located in the eastern panhandle of the great state of West Virginia, was established in 1801 and is named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. The area played a significant role in American history, being the site of key events during the Civil War and of the notable abolitionist movement.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Susquehannocks and the Algonquians. In the early 1700s, English and German settlers began to move into the region, resulting in the foundation of towns like Shepherdstown and Charles Town.

The county's strategic location at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers made it a central point during the American Civil War. The town of Harpers Ferry, in particular, gained national attention in 1859 when abolitionist John Brown led a raid on the federal armory in an attempt to spark a widespread rebellion against slavery. Although Brown's raid ultimately failed, it became a catalyst for the Civil War. Harpers Ferry changed hands between the Union and Confederate forces multiple times during the war and was the setting for the largest surrender of Union troops in 1862.

Jefferson County was originally part of Virginia but became part of West Virginia when the state was created in 1863 as a Unionist response to Virginia's secession from the United States.

One fun fact about Jefferson County is that it is home to the historic Shepherdstown, which is claimed to be the oldest town in West Virginia, officially established in 1762. In addition to its historical significance, the town is recognized for its vibrant arts scene and charming streets lined with shops, restaurants, and galleries.
