Mercer County, located in the southern region of the great state of West Virginia, was officially created in 1837. It was formed from parts of Giles and Tazewell Counties (in Virginia) and named in honor of Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer, a distinguished military figure and physician in the American colonies. The county seat, Princeton, was established in 1838 and named after the historic Battle of Princeton.

Mercer County played a role in the Civil War, with many of its residents fighting for the Confederacy. Due to its location on the border between Union and Confederate territories, the county experienced several small skirmishes and invasions by both sides.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the county grew economically and demographically. The coal and railroad industries led to the development of many towns, including Bluefield, the largest city in Mercer County. The Norfolk and Western Railway connected the county with other parts of the United States, facilitating the growth of commerce and transportation. The timber, coal, and coke production in the county contributed to the overall progress of West Virginia.

Today, Mercer County continues to be a significant economic and cultural region in West Virginia. It boasts a rich history, natural beauty, and offers various recreational activities such as skiing, white-water rafting, mountain biking, and hiking at its numerous state parks and recreation areas.

Fun fact: In Bluefield, Mercer County, there is a quirky but legendary local tradition. If the temperature reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the Chamber of Commerce offers free lemonade to the community. This Lemonade-Lemon tradition started over 90 years ago and demonstrates the friendly atmosphere and unique charm of Mercer County.
