Mingo County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was officially founded on January 30, 1895. The county is situated in the southwestern part of the state, bordering both Kentucky and Virginia. It encompasses an area of approximately 423 square miles and has its county seat in the city of Williamson.

The area that now constitutes Mingo County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Mingo and Shawnee. European settlers began to arrive in the 1700s, primarily of English, Scots-Irish, and German descent. Coal mining became a significant part of the region's economy during the late 1800s and early 1900s, leading to a major population increase.

Mingo County is perhaps best known for the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud, a series of altercations and conflicts that took place between two rural families in the late 19th century. The long-standing feud has become a popular subject in American folklore, and its origins are attributed to multiple factors, including competition over land, timber, and economic differences.

Fun Fact: In recent years, Mingo County has capitalized on its association with the Hatfield-McCoy feud to promote tourism. The county is home to the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, a popular off-road trail system that spans hundreds of miles and attracts off-road vehicle enthusiasts from all over the country.
