Monongalia County, located in the northern region of the great state of West Virginia, was established on October 7, 1776, making it one of the oldest counties in West Virginia. It was formed from the western part of Augusta County in Virginia. The county gets its name from the Monongahela River, which forms its western boundary. The river's name is derived from the Delaware Indian word "mech-we-hi-e-la," which means "the high banks opposite side." Monongalia County played an essential role during the early days of the United States; it was the staging ground for many westward-bound settlers.

The county seat, Morgantown, was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1785. Morgantown is home to West Virginia University, the largest institution of higher education in the state, which was founded in 1867.

Mining, timber production, and glass manufacturing were some of the prominent industries in Monongalia County during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, contributing significantly to its economic growth.

One fun fact about Monongalia County is that it contains one of the only two remaining historic covered bridges in the state of West Virginia. The Forks-of-Cheat Baptist Church, which dates back 215 years, is considered the oldest Baptist Church west of the Allegheny Mountains.
