Tyler County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was created on December 6, 1814, from parts of Ohio County. The county was named in honor of John Tyler Sr., the father of the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler, who served from 1841 to 1845. This area was initially explored by Europeans in the early 1700s, with permanent settlements being established in the mid-1700s. The county seat is located in Middlebourne, which was founded in 1813.

Tyler County's primary economy was traditionally based on agriculture, with an emphasis on livestock and wheat production. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, oil and natural gas production also played a significant role in the county's economy, as it was part of the enormous oil and gas fields of Western Virginia.

One fun fact about Tyler County is that it hosts the annual West Virginia Oil and Gas Festival, which has been held since 1968. This celebration commemorates Tyler County's significant role in the history of the American oil and gas industry. The festival features various events like oil and gas exhibits, live music, a car show, a queen's pageant, and an antique market, among others. The event draws visitors from across the region and the nation, serving as a celebration of West Virginia's rich industrial history.
