Wetzel County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was founded on January 10, 1846. The county was formed from Tyler County and named after Lewis Wetzel, a famous frontiersman and skilled Indian fighter. The county seat, New Martinsville, is situated on the Ohio River and was established in 1838. Wetzel County covers an area of approximately 361 square miles.

Wetzel County has had a history of involvement in various industries such as coal mining, lumber, and oil production from the late 19th century through the 20th century. The completion of the Short Line Railroad in 1886 connected the county with the Baltimore and Ohio railway system, which fostered the growth and development of the region's industries. The county experienced a population boom during the early 20th century due in part to the increase in economic activity.

A fun fact about Wetzel County is that it is home to the "World's Largest Sycamore Tree". The tree, which can be found on the grounds of the old West Virginia State Penitentiary Farm, has a circumference of 26 feet and a height of over 100 feet. It is believed to be more than 300 years old and is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike.
