Wirt County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on January 19, 1848. It was named in honor of William Wirt, who was a prominent statesman, author, and one of the founders of the Anti-Masonic Party. He also served as the U.S. Attorney General from 1817 to 1829. The county seat is Elizabeth, which was named after Wirt's wife, Elizabeth Washington.

The origins of Wirt County lie in the land that was once part of Wood County. The decision to create Wirt County resulted from the difficulties faced by residents in reaching the Wood County seat, Parkersburg. At the time, the area was primarily agricultural, with an economy based on farms, livestock, and timber production.

Throughout its history, Wirt County has remained largely rural and agricultural. However, it has also played host to several notable industries, including oil and natural gas production. The Oil and Gas Boom era during the late 19th and early 20th centuries significantly impacted Wirt County, leading to the construction of many oil derricks, pipelines, and refineries in the region. This boom period also resulted in a rapid population increase, as people sought work in this burgeoning industry.

For a fun fact about Wirt County, the area is home to the unique "Frogs of Palestine," which is a collection of frog-shaped sandstone formations near the small town of Palestine. These natural wonders have even inspired local festivals dedicated to the frogs in the past.
