Albany County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Wyoming. It was created on December 16, 1868, as an original county of the Wyoming Territory, which was established that same year. Albany County's rich historical background is intertwined with the development of the Old West, including the arrival of European settlers, railroad expansion, and the cattle industry.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was occupied by various Native American tribes, including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Oglala Sioux. With the arrival of European fur traders and settlers in the early to mid-19th century, the area saw an increase in economic activity, especially with the expansion of the Union Pacific Railroad reaching Wyoming in 1867. The establishment of the Laramie County Seat in 1868 led to the organization of Albany County.

The city of Laramie, named after the fur trapper Jacques La Ramee, became the county seat and is also the home of the University of Wyoming, which was found in 1886. The University has played a significant role in the county's development and is a central aspect of life in Albany County today.

A fun fact about Albany County is that it is home to the highest point in Wyoming, Laramie Peak, which stands at 10,276 feet above sea level. The peak offers breathtaking views and is a favorite destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Additionally, the county offers numerous recreational opportunities, including Medicine Bow National Forest and Vedauwoo Recreation Area, which are popular for outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, and camping.
