Aleutians East Borough is a region located in the southern part of the great state of Alaska. It was formed on April 19, 1987, making it a relatively young borough compared to others in the state. This region encompasses several major island groups, including the Aleutian Islands, the Shumagin Islands, and the Pavlof Islands, which stretch from the Alaska Peninsula in the west to the mid-southern coast of Alaska in the east.

The area has a rich history going back thousands of years, with indigenous peoples like the Aleut or Unangax people inhabiting the islands. The Aleutians eventually became the site of contact between Russian explorers and fur traders in the 18th century. The Russians were instrumental in setting up the Alaskan fur trade, with trade networks established throughout the Aleutians. In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire, which included the Aleutians East Borough as part of the deal.

During World War II, the Aleutians East Borough played a significant role as it was the site of the Aleutian Campaign. Japanese forces invaded and occupied two of the islands in the chain, Attu and Kiska, prompting U.S. and Canadian forces to launch a counteroffensive to regain control of the islands in 1943.

Today, Aleutians East Borough is home to about 3,300 people, with the economy mainly dependent on fishing, fish processing, and some tourism. The area is known for its spectacular landscapes, rich biodiversity, and the presence of numerous volcanoes, such as Mount Pavlof, one of the most active volcanoes in North America.

Fun Fact: The Aleutians East Borough spans across the International Date Line, which means it technically falls into both the eastern and western hemispheres. This makes it one of the few places in the United States where you can be in two hemispheres simultaneously!
