Aleutians West Census Area, also known as Aleutians West Borough, is located in the westernmost part of the great state of Alaska, in the United States. This unique region boasts a diverse history that combines its rich Aleut culture, Russian colonization, and American frontier spirit.

The Aleutians West region has been inhabited for thousands of years by the indigenous Aleut people, known for their remarkable sea hunting and navigational skills. The earliest contact between these native people and the outside world was with Russian explorers and fur traders in the mid-1700s. As a result, the era of Russian colonization began, and Russians established settlements in the Aleutians and other parts of Alaska.

In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia. With the transfer of Alaska to the U.S., the Aleutians were integrated into the newly acquired territory. Over time, the region saw the rise of the fishing industry and increased whaling activities along the Aleutian chain.

During World War II, the Aleutians West Borough played a significant role as Japan invaded the Aleutian islands of Attu and Kiska in 1942. These islands became the only parts of North America to be occupied by enemy forces during the war. The U.S. military mounted a campaign to recapture the islands, resulting in the bloody Battle of Attu in 1943.

Today, Aleutians West Borough preserves its unique blending of Aleut, Russian, and American cultures. Its remote location, extraordinary wildlife, and vibrant community attract visitors who seek to experience this one-of-a-kind destination.

Fun fact: The Aleutian Islands are located in both the Eastern and Western hemispheres. As part of Aleutians West Borough, Semisopochnoi Island is notable for its location, as it is one of the few spots in the United States that lies in the Eastern Hemisphere.
