Bethel Borough, officially known as the City of Bethel, is located in southwestern Alaska in the vast Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. With a rich history dating back thousands of years, it was originally home to the Yup'ik Eskimo people. The area was used as a seasonal fish camp, and its Yup'ik name, "Mamterilleq," translates to "Smokehouse People," referencing the traditional fish-smoking processes of its early inhabitants.

European contact with the Yup'ik people of the Bethel area began in the late 1800s. The first Moravian church missionaries arrived in 1885, attracted by the prospect of bringing Christianity to the indigenous tribes. Early on, the missionaries established a mission and reading school, which soon became a prominent feature of the community. The settlement continued to expand with the arrival of more Moravians, adding an orphanage, a sawmill, and other facilities.

Over time, the city has evolved into a crucial transportation and administrative hub for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta communities. Bethel was incorporated as a city in 1957, and today, it provides essential services, including healthcare, education, and transportation, for numerous remote Alaskan villages.

One fun fact about Bethel is that it hosts the Kuskokwim 300, a famous dog sled race that occurs every January. This event attracts mushers from all over Alaska and the world for a thrilling race across the snowy landscape, covering approximately 300 miles while also celebrating the region's rich cultural heritage.
